Phil West - Undersheriff
Undersheriff Phil West came to the Mono County Sheriff's Office in 2002. He began his law enforcement career with the Bishop Police Department in 1990 after working in private industry beginning in 1977. Over the past years, he has worked a variety of assignments with both departments ranging from: K9 handler, Mounted Patrol Officer/Instructor, Special Entry Team member, Resident Mono County Deputy, Field Training Officer, Firearms Range Master/Instructor, Chemical Agent Instructor, Patrol Sergeant, and Assistant Chief Deputy Coroner. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and Chief Deputy Coroner on January 7, 2013. His current rank to Undersheriff on February 5, 2020. Phil has attended the California Peace Officers Memorial in Sacramento since 2002 and has participated with the Mounted Unit at the memorial each year since 2003.
Phil and his wife, Karen, dated in high school. They were married in 1980 and have a daughter and a son. Both children attended and graduated from high school in Mono County. Their daughter is employed in the medical profession and their son is employed within the law enforcement community.
Phil and Karen have lived in Inyo and Mono Counties for over 30 years. Phil enjoys playing classical guitar in addition to both Phil and Karen enjoying a variety of outdoor and equestrian activities.
