The Mono County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) processes all initial and renewal applications for license to carry a concealed weapon (CCW) for all residents of Mono County. Residency is determined by either Mono County voter registration or a valid California driver’s license / identification card, demonstrating that the applicant primarily resides in Mono County.

The Mammoth Lakes Police Department (MLPD) no longer issues CCWs. All MLPD CCW holders need to start a new initial application with MCSO when their current CCW nears expiration. These are not renewals, as the permit was not issued by MCSO. This applies to all CCW holders with MLPD permits; there are no exceptions.

Effective April 22, 2025, residents of the United States and territories other than California are eligible to apply for a California CCW in the jurisdiction where they intend to spend time within the subsequent 12 months. See California Department of Justice bulletin for further information. Applicants must be both:

1. members of:
   a)    The California Rifle & Pistol Association, Incorporated,
   b)    Gun Owners of America, Inc.
   c)    Gun Owners of California, Inc.
   d)    The Second Amendment Foundation; or
   e)    Firearms Policy Coalition; AND
2.  not otherwise prohibited from possessing firearms under federal or California law

Upon completion of the application process, the Sheriff will review the application and determine if a CCW will be issued.
